What Is Kaomoji?
Kaomoji (顔文字) combines the Japanese words kao (face) and moji (character). They emerged on Japanese bulletin boards in the 1980s and differ from Western emoticons in one important way: they are read upright. Where :-) asks you to tilt your head, (◕‿◕) already faces you.
That upright orientation is why kaomoji are so much more expressive. Because they draw on the full Unicode range rather than plain punctuation, they can include arms, blush marks, animal ears, and even props like the flipped table in (╯°□°）╯︵ ┻━┻.
