Light and metal
These two are the most requested effects on the page and the two Unicode is least able to help with, for the same reason: both are about colour and light falling on a surface, and a Unicode character carries neither. A character is an identity, not a picture. What it looks like is decided later, by whatever font renders it.
Neon text
A neon sign is a bright thin stroke with a soft halo bleeding out of it. Both halves of that are light, and light is not something a character can carry. Nothing you copy from this page will glow. What you can do is pick letterforms that survive a dark background: the double-struck set because its doubled stroke reads as a tube outline, and the bold and sans bold sets because thin strokes disappear against dark first.
The real answer is a neon typeface, and there are eight on the shelf below, drawn from the sixty-two the library holds. Look at how they are built before you pick one. The stronger neon families ship in two or three matched weights, typically a light and a contour, meant to be set on top of each other in different colours so you get the tube and the glow as separate layers. If you set only the regular weight you get the outline and none of the effect, which is the usual reason a downloaded neon font looks flat.

Gold, chrome and metallic text
Gold and chrome are gradients. A metal letter is a shape with a specific fill: a bright band across the middle, a dark band underneath, a highlight at the top edge. Unicode has no colour at all outside emoji, and even an emoji only has the colours its vendor chose, which is why the same one looks different on an iPhone and on Android.
Fonts mostly have no colour either. An ordinary OpenType file stores outlines and nothing else, so the gold has to be added where you set the type, in a design tool or in CSS. Colour font formats do exist, COLR/CPAL and OpenType-SVG, and a handful of metallic faces ship that way, but support for them is uneven enough that you should check how one renders before you commit to it.
The practical route is a heavy face plus a gradient fill you apply yourself. For faces built to take that treatment, the metallic font generator is the right page. The bold styles above are only useful as a stand-in in a field where you cannot control colour anyway, like a display name.

Depth and edge
Depth and outline are the two effects people most often assume are the same trick. They are not. One of them has a genuine Unicode equivalent and the other has nothing at all, and it is worth knowing which is which before you spend time looking.
Outline and hollow text
This is the exception. The double-struck alphabet, also called blackboard bold, is drawn with a doubled vertical stroke that reads as hollow, and it is the only alphabet in Unicode designed that way. It exists because mathematicians writing on a blackboard could not make a bold letter look bold with chalk, so they doubled the stem instead, and the convention was later encoded at U+1D538 onwards.
Seven of its capitals are somewhere else. C, H, N, P, Q, R and Z had already been encoded in the Letterlike Symbols block years earlier as โ, โ, โ, โ, โ, โ and โค, and Unicode does not encode the same character twice, so those seven slots in the maths range were left permanently empty. A generator that just adds a fixed offset to every letter produces blanks at exactly those seven positions. This one handles them, so a double-struck R comes out as โ rather than as a blank.
Circled letters are worth distinguishing here. They are enclosed rather than outlined: the ring is a separate shape drawn around a solid letter, not the letter opened up. If what you want is a real hollow face, note that outlines lose their counters at small sizes as the stroke closes the gaps, so set them large.

3D and drop shadow text
A 3D letter and a drop shadow are the same trick: a second copy of the shape, offset and darkened, sitting behind the first. That needs two overlapping shapes, and a Unicode character is one shape in one position. The nearest thing Unicode has to layering is the combining marks, and those sit above, below or across the letter rather than behind it, so they read as damage rather than as depth. There is no way to fake this in text you copy.
In a real 3D font the extrusion is drawn into the outline by the designer, once, at a fixed angle. That has a consequence worth knowing before you download one: you cannot change the direction of the light, and you cannot separate the face from the side. If you need the depth to be adjustable, use a flat face and add the extrusion in your design tool instead. The bold styles above are a stopgap for fields where you cannot use a font file at all.

Texture: chalk and stamp
Chalk and rubber stamp are both distress effects. The letterform underneath is ordinary; what makes the look is the damage to its edge. Unicode encodes shapes, not surfaces, so neither has an equivalent here, and both sections below are mostly about what to look for in the font file.
Chalk text
Chalk lettering is defined by its edge: a grainy stroke with gaps where the chalk skipped, and a slight wobble because it was drawn by hand on a rough surface. None of that is encodable. The styles above are only there because they read as informal and hand-set rather than typeset, which is a weak substitute and worth saying out loud.
A real chalk font stores that grain as extra points on the outline, sometimes several hundred per letter where a clean face has a dozen. That is why distressed faces are so much larger than they look and why they can be slow to render on a page with a lot of text. If you are putting one on a website, check the file first: the font analyzer shows the glyph count and file size, and the subsetter will cut it down to the characters you actually set.

Rubber stamp and postmark text
A stamp reads as a stamp because of three things: capitals, generous letterspacing, and an ink-starved edge where the rubber did not meet the paper evenly. Unicode can give you one of the three. Small capitals keep the uppercase feel without shouting, and the fullwidth forms space letters out because each one occupies a full character cell.
The broken edge is only in a font file. The shelf below leans towards postmark and military-issue faces, which are display weights: they are cut for a single line at a large size and go muddy in a paragraph. If you want the look on a document rather than a graphic, a plain condensed face in wide letterspacing usually reads better than a distressed one.

Stars, hearts and flowers
These three are different from everything above, and in a useful way. Unicode genuinely does have stars, hearts and flowers, as characters in their own right. What it does not have is letters shaped like them. So the honest answer is: you decorate around the text, and the letters themselves stay letters.
Star text and star symbols
There is no star alphabet. What there is, and what people actually use, is a set of star characters from Miscellaneous Symbols and Dingbats that you paste on either side of ordinary text: โ and โ at U+2605 and U+2606, the four-pointed โฆ and โง at U+2726 and U+2727, and the circled โช at U+272A. Copy any of them straight from this paragraph.
These are text characters, not emoji, which is the reason to prefer them. They inherit the colour of the surrounding text instead of arriving as a picture in someone else's palette, they take one code point rather than two, and they will not switch to a coloured emoji rendering on one platform and a black outline on another. The style set above pairs with them: circled and double-struck letters share the geometric weight of a star and do not fight it.

Heart text and heart symbols
Same situation as the stars, with one extra trap. The plain text hearts are โฅ at U+2665 and โก at U+2661, both from the card-suit symbols, plus the rotated bullet โฅ at U+2765. The one most people reach for is โค at U+2764, and that one has a split personality: followed by an invisible variation selector, U+FE0F, it renders as a full colour emoji, and without it, or with U+FE0E, it renders as ordinary black text. Copy a heart out of a message and you often bring the selector with it, which is why the same heart is red in one field and black in another.
If you want a heart that stays the colour of your text, use โฅ or โก. If you want the red one, use โค and accept that it is an emoji and will be drawn by the platform. The script styles above are paired here because a heart beside connected letterforms is the combination people are usually after, and the shelf below has the rarer thing: faces where a heart is drawn inside the letter rather than next to it.

Flower text and floral symbols
The flowers live in Dingbats, and they are called florettes: โฟ at U+273F, โ at U+2740, โพ at U+273E and โ at U+2741, with โ at U+2698 over in Miscellaneous Symbols. Like the stars they are text characters, so they take your text colour rather than arriving as a picture. Two practical notes. They are visually heavy for their size, so one at each end of a short line is usually the limit before the name stops being readable. And a screen reader will announce each one by its Unicode name, so a name wrapped in four florettes is read aloud as four repetitions of "black florette" before the name itself. The lighter styles above are here for the same reason: script, italic and small caps do not compete with the decoration.

Why almost no text effect survives copy and paste
It is worth understanding the rule underneath all nine sections above, because it predicts the answer for any effect you think of next. A Unicode character is an identity, not a picture. U+0041 means "Latin capital A" and says nothing about how wide it is, how heavy the strokes are, or what colour it is. Everything visual is decided afterwards by the font doing the rendering, and you do not control which font that is on somebody else's device.
That is why the styles this site can offer are all shape substitutions. Bold text is not your A made heavier, it is a different character, U+1D400, that happens to be drawn heavy in most fonts. There are roughly a thousand of these styled Latin letters in Unicode, nearly all of them added for mathematical notation, and they cover weight, slope, a doubled stroke, a monospaced design, an enclosing ring and a full-width cell. There is no member of that set for glow, gradient, extrusion, shadow, grain or bevel, because none of those things is a letter identity. No tool can add one.
The only exception in the whole set is the combining marks, U+0300 to U+036F, which attach to the letter before them instead of standing alone. That is a real layering mechanism, and it is what strikethrough and underline use. But the marks are positioned above, below or across the base character, never behind it, so they cannot produce depth. If an effect needs a second surface, it needs a font file or an image.
Choosing an effect font without regretting it
- 1.Check whether it is a layered family.Neon, outline and 3D faces are often shipped as two or three files meant to be stacked in different colours. Installing one of them and typing gets you a third of the effect. If the family lists a "contour", "inline", "shadow" or "light" member, you need all of them.
- 2.Set it once at the size you will use. Effect faces are cut for display. An outline closes up, a chalk edge turns to mush and an extrusion swallows the counters somewhere below about 24 pixels. Test at the real size before you commit, not at 96.
- 3.Expect a partial character set. Display faces routinely ship capitals only, or capitals plus digits and no punctuation. Type your actual text into the preview, including the apostrophe and the ampersand, rather than the sample word.
- 4.Read the licence before commercial use. Every font on the shelf below links to its own page with its licence attached. A face being downloadable for free says nothing about whether you may use it on a product, in a logo, or embedded in an app. If you have a file already and want the embedding permissions read out of it, the font licence checker does that.
- 5.For the web, convert and subset. Effect faces are heavy because texture and extrusion cost outline points. Convert to WOFF2 and cut the character set down to what you set, which for a headline face is often twenty-six letters. Both jobs are on the webfont generator.
Downloadable fonts, grouped by look
Everything above is Unicode text, which means it renders in whatever font the reader's device happens to supply. When you need a specific look to survive that, you need a real font file. These are grouped so you can browse by the look you are after, and each name links through to its download page and its licence on FreeFontZone.
Neon and tube lettering
Faces drawn as an outline with an inner stroke so the letter reads as a bent glass tube. Several ship as layered families, a light layer and a contour layer you stack in two colours.
Extruded and 3D
The depth is part of the outline, drawn once by the designer at a fixed angle. Change the size and the extrusion scales with it; you cannot change the light direction.
Outline and hollow
Open counters and a single stroke. These are the widest group here by a long way, and the one place a downloaded font behaves much like the Unicode approximation above it.
Chalk and dust
Rough-edged faces where the texture is cut into the outline as extra points. Expect bigger files than a clean face of the same size.
Rubber stamp and postmark
Ink-starved capitals with broken edges. Mostly display weights, so set them large and give them room.
Hearts drawn into the letters
Novelty faces where the counters or the terminals are heart shaped. A small group, and the only way to get a heart inside a letter rather than beside it.
Stars and night-sky display
Eight faces with stars built into the letterforms. Legibility drops fast at text size, so treat these as headline material.
