Transliteration is not translation: the meaning stays in the original language, only the writing system changes. It is also different from a Unicode Converter, which rescues text that was typed in a legacy font encoding such as Kruti Dev.

What is transliteration?
Transliteration writes the sounds of a word in a different script. The word itself does not change, only the writing system does, so namaste typed in English letters becomes नमस्ते in Devanagari. Translation changes the meaning into another language, transliteration does not.
How do I type in English and get Devanagari?
Open the Hindi or Nepali tool and type the word the way it sounds, using ordinary English letters. The Devanagari appears beside it as you type and you can copy it with one click. Nothing is installed and no keyboard layout has to be changed.
Which languages and scripts are supported?
Ten languages are supported: Hindi and Nepali in Devanagari, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam in their own South Indian scripts, Bengali in Bengali script, Gujarati in Gujarati script, Punjabi in Gurmukhi, and Arabic in Arabic script.
Is transliteration the same as a Unicode converter?
No. Transliteration turns English letters into a native script. A Unicode converter repairs text that was typed in a legacy font encoding such as Kruti Dev and maps it back to standard Unicode. Use transliteration when you are typing fresh text, and the Unicode converter when you already have text stuck in a legacy font.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. Every transliteration tool on this site runs entirely in your browser, so the text you type never leaves your device and nothing is stored.
