Handwriting Font Generator

There are two script alphabets in Unicode and no more. Both live in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, added so a mathematician could write a script L for a Lagrangian and have it mean something different from an ordinary L. That origin decides everything about how they behave.

Eleven characters of the plain script alphabet are not in that block at all. The capitals B, E, F, H, I, L, M and R and the lowercase e, g and o had already been encoded in Letterlike Symbols years earlier, as ℬ ℰ ℱ ℋ ℐ ℒ ℳ ℛ ℯ ℊ ℴ, and Unicode never encodes the same character twice, so those eleven slots in the maths range were left permanently empty. A generator that adds a fixed offset to each letter renders blanks at exactly those positions, which is why some tools give you a name with holes in it. This one substitutes the Letterlike characters. Bold script has no exceptions and is complete, so if your text is full of Es and Ms it will look more even.

Neither alphabet has digits, so a number in your text stays in plain numerals. Neither joins, because each glyph was designed to stand alone. And both are compatibility characters, so a field that normalises text on save will turn them straight back into ordinary letters.

Handwritten and script get used as synonyms, and for Unicode purposes they are: the same two alphabets are all there is. What this preset adds is the two italics, and it is worth being clear that an italic is not handwriting. A modern italic is a companion design to a roman, often just a slanted and redrawn version of it, and the letters still sit apart. If what you want is the impression of something written quickly rather than something written by hand, the italics get closer than script does and they are more legible at small sizes.

One oddity to expect: the lowercase italic h is ℎ, borrowed from Letterlike Symbols, because the slot the maths range would have used is reserved. It is the same character physicists use for the Planck constant. It renders correctly nearly everywhere, but if you ever see one letter of an italic word in a slightly different weight, that is why.

A signature face is a script drawn as one fast stroke with a heavy downstroke and a flourish, usually with a long tail off the last letter. Unicode can give you the weight, through bold script, and it can give you the line, through the combining low line at U+0332, which is appended after each character and drawn underneath it. It cannot give you the tail, because a tail is an alternate glyph inside a font rather than a character.

The underline is more useful than it looks. Because it is a combining mark rather than a substituted letter, your text stays exactly as typed underneath, so it still matches a search, and it survives the normalisation that folds bold script back to plain letters. That makes it one of the few styles here that reliably sticks in a profile field.

If the goal is a signature for a document, none of this is the answer, and the letterforms are not what matters. Where a typed name counts as a signature it counts because of the process around it, not because it looks handwritten. For an image of a signature to place in a design, take one of the 69 faces on the shelf below and set it large: they are drawn for one short line and they degrade badly in running text.

Curly usually means swashes: the extended loops and flourishes on a capital, or the curled tail on a final letter. Those are alternate glyphs stored inside a font file and switched on by OpenType features, most often swash, contextual alternates and stylistic sets. One code point can map to several glyphs, and the font decides which one you get based on where the letter sits in the word.

Unicode has none of that. A code point is an identity, and this page can only hand you one character per letter, so there is no mechanism for a bigger capital at the start of a name. Bold script carries the most loop of the alphabets available. Fraktur capitals carry more curl than anything else in Unicode, though its lowercase reads as gothic rather than as writing, so it works for an initial and not for a whole word.

The practical catch with real curly faces is that most design tools hide the alternates behind a glyph panel, and most social and document tools do not expose them at all. A swash font pasted into a web form gives you the plain default glyphs and none of the reason you picked it.

Elegant is the section where the honest answer contradicts the expectation. Follow the word into the font library and the 903 faces filed under it are led by Didot, Playfair Display, Tiffany and Dalliance, which are high-contrast serifs rather than handwriting. That is not a mistake in the catalogue. What reads as elegant in type is stroke contrast, the difference between the thick and thin parts of a letter, together with fine hairline serifs and generous space. Handwriting is a separate quality that often is not elegant at all.

The consequence is practical: high-contrast faces need size. The hairlines that make them elegant thin out until they break up or disappear at small sizes and on low-resolution screens, which is why a Didot-style face looks superb in a large heading and muddy in body text.

In Unicode the closest register is small caps, which reads as formal because setting a line in capitals at lowercase height is a typesetting convention rather than a decoration. It is not a Unicode block. It is a collection assembled from the IPA and the phonetic extensions, which is why there is no small capital X and an x in your text stays full height. In exchange, small caps is one of the few styles here that survives normalisation intact.

Whisper is not a classification and there is no whisper style in type. It is a mood word people reach for when they want text that looks quiet: small, light, understated, the visual equivalent of saying something softly. The searches also pick up the messaging app of the same name, whose wordmark is a script, which is part of why the term lands in this family at all.

The nearest thing Unicode has to quiet is smallness, and the superscript set is the only genuinely small alphabet in it. Like small caps it is a borrowed collection rather than a block, assembled mostly from the phonetic extensions and the modifier letters, and the gaps show: there is no superscript q, so a q in your text passes through at full size next to the small letters.

One difference from small caps that catches people out. Superscript characters are compatibility forms, so a field that normalises text on save turns them straight back into ordinary full-size letters, while small caps sticks. If the text has to survive being saved, small caps is the safer of the two.
